KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia Airport Holdings Bhd (MAHB) has clarified that the flooding incident at the Penang International Airport and its surrounding area this morning did not affect any flight operations.
The airport operator said waters had receded by 10.15am and cleaning works were quickly completed in the next 15 minutes.
“Flight operations were not affected by the flash flood as the runway and taxiways remained clear of water.
“However, due to the extremely heavy rain, several flight take-offs and landings were delayed,” said MAHB in a Facebook post
MAHB further explained that the airport’s flood mitigation measures such as the on-site detention tank were functioning well, but continuous and extremely heavy rainfall had caused water levels to rise quickly.
MAHB also refuted that the airport had faced a power outage.
“Meanwhile, there was no power outage at the airport during the flood as reported by some news media.
“A few retail outlets had experienced power trips that were rectified immediately. We will continue to remain vigilant and ensure a safe and seamless journey for all passengers,'” said MAHB.
Earlier today, The Vibes reported that downpours in Penang have left several areas on the island facing flash floods, including the Penang International Airport in Bayan Lepas.
Meanwhile, Penang State Executive Councillor for Tourism Development, Arts, Culture and Heritage, Yeoh Soon Hin also lamented over the flash flood incident at the airport.
“Penang International Airport is our first hospitality image and impression to the world. It is very shameful to see the floods at the airport.
“I have been working hard and have so many plans to bring more major international events, more direct flights and more tourists to Penang. These floodings in the airport will definitely affect my efforts to promote Penang and dampen the state’s image,'” he said in a Facebook post.
Yeoh also hopes that relevant authorities like MAHB as well as state and federal agencies could come up with a long-term solution to resolve this issue. – The Vibes, September 24, 2022
