KUALA LUMPUR – Amidst swirling rumours of an early general election, Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said the party plans to address “positive matters” during their special meeting with grassroots leaders today.

In a brief press conference, Ahmad evaded questions by the media on whether a proper election timeline will be unveiled during the special meeting today.

The main agenda of the meeting, he said, will be speeches by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob and party president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

“We plan to only discuss ‘perkara-perkara baik’ (positive matters),” he said in jest to the press.

Umno earlier invited its divisional leaders, including its Wanita, youth, and Puteri leaders, to a meeting with the prime minister and party president next week.

The invite sent by Ahmad on September 30 noted that the meeting will be held next Tuesday, 2pm at Dewan Tun Hussein Onn, World Trade Centre here.

While the letter did not state the reason for the meeting, it is expected that the leaders will be discussing preparations for the next general election.

The letter was issued following the conclusion of the Supreme Council meeting last Thursday.

Ahmad had said Ismail Sabri will present a suitable date to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to dissolve Parliament and pave the way for a general election to be held this year.

However, Umno has been criticised for pushing for polls during the monsoon season. – The Vibes, October 4, 2022
