MIRI – Rivers in three northern Sarawak populated localities have today exceeded their danger levels following more heavy rain last night and early today.

The rivers are Sg Teru in Long Teru in Baram, Sg Marudi along the Marudi-Miri district boundary, and Sg Kuala Binyo in Bintulu.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department said in an update that the rivers have risen beyond their respective danger marks, while another river at Kuala Tutong in Baram is at the warning level.

Areas in the immediate vicinity of the rivers that have exceeded danger levels are flooded.

Yesterday, there were fresh incidents of hillslope erosion and strong wind, with floodwaters yet to subside in some parts of interior Sarawak.

The wind had ripped off the roof and steel beams of a school, SK Merbau near Miri city, as well as that of several houses in the Tudan squatter resettlement on the outskirts of the city.

At Kg Bakam about 20kms from Miri city, numerous houses along Sg Bakam there had a close shave with a landslide this morning, when a 50m stretch of riverbank fronting their houses eroded and slid into the river. – The Vibes, October 15, 2022
