KOTA KINABALU – Intermittent rain since noon today in several districts on the west coast of Sabah has caused another episode of heavy flooding in Sugud, Penampang.

Water has risen in some parts of the huge suburban village area, especially in Kg Kodou, where a massive flood wreaked havoc on the eve of Malaysia Day last year.

At least two individuals had gone missing in the flood last year, while residents in the village took over a month to recoup their losses.

The Civil Defence Force has not made any update as of 8pm tonight.

However, a Kg Kodou resident told The Vibes on condition of anonymity that there had been no assistance from the authorities as at 8pm tonight.

They also said there had been no electricity since 2pm today.

Last week, several districts in the same part of Sabah were also hit by floods.

They were Sipitang, Tenom, Kunak, and Penampang. The number of victims was more than 700 people at the peak of the inundation.

The Sabah government has expedited the flood mitigation project in Sugud and according to the state minister in charge of drainage and irrigation, upon completion it would be able to handle more rainfall.

However, Datuk Seri Jeffrey Kitingan, who is Sabah deputy chief minister, said flooding will persist until the whole project is completed. – The Vibes, November 5, 2022
