MIRI – The number of Covid-19 infections in Sarawak have risen in the past week, with 1,046 new cases reported from November 20 to 26.

Deputy Premier and state Public Health, Housing, and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian said this is a surge from 814 cases in the previous week, and 616 cases the week before that.

“There is also a rise in Covid-19 related admission to intensive care units in the hospitals.

“This upward trend may continue, thus, the public must take the necessary precautions such as masking in crowded places and getting the booster shot if they have not done so,” Sim said when winding up the state assembly sitting yesterday evening.

He also urged those who are infected with mild symptoms and who are isolating themselves at home to go for treatment in hospitals in order to get Paxlovid pills.

Last month on November 3, Sarawak reported two people infected by the highly contagious Omicron XBB Covid-19 strain.

The state Disaster Management Committee had then warned Sarawakians of the possibility of more such cases among the community.

The two cases of XBB detected in Sarawak involved a tourist on a US passport and a local returning from the umrah pilgrimage. – The Vibes, December 1, 2022
