KUALA LUMPUR – Four individuals, believed to be relatives of those declared missing in last Friday’s massive landslide in Batang Kali, have turned up at the search-and-rescue operations centre there today.

According to The Vibes' Bahasa Malaysia sister publication Getaran, the individuals comprising three women and a man were seen heading towards the police operations centre there at about 4pm.

At least one of the individuals who arrived at the disaster site is a foreigner.

The Getaran report said that at least one of the individuals was crying as they were led into the command centre.

Earlier this morning, rescuers at the landslide faced a new challenge in their efforts to locate nine more victims who are still missing, Bernama reported.

Besides the softening of the ground, rescuers also face squelchy soil as deep as 16m.

“The depth is the deepest recorded so far because of the rain yesterday,” said Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (operations) Hafisham Mohd Noor.

In the 2.42am incident on Friday, a landslide measuring almost 300m long and 70m high came crashing onto the campsite located along Jalan Genting-Batang Kali.

As of noon today, nine victims were still missing while 24 out of 94 people who were at the campsite were confirmed dead. – The Vibes, December 19, 2022
