PUTRAJAYA – The government will impose stricter standard operating procedures (SOPs) for all inbound travellers – regardless of the country of origin – to curb the possible increase in Covid-19 cases locally, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Anwar said the decision was made after government officials studied the current trend of Covid-19 cases globally rather than focusing on any one country, specifically China and the United States, where cases remain proportionally high compared to their respective population numbers.
The Tambun MP, who acknowledged numerous reports involving the massive outbreak of Covid-19 cases in China, insisted, however, that a blanket set of SOPs would be best to avoid complicated ad-hoc regulations imposed on travellers coming from a specific country.
“There will be tighter SOPs for all foreign inbound travellers. We do not discriminate,” he said during a press conference after chairing the weekly cabinet meeting here.
Anwar stressed that Malaysians’ overall health will be prioritised over economic interests, amid a perception that the government is pushing for higher tourist traffic, especially from China.
“The issues of tourism and economic development cannot be (placed) above the importance of protecting the people against any outbreak, including Covid-19,” he said.
Regarding the details of the SOPs, Anwar said the Health Ministry will provide more information on the matter.
Anwar also urged Malaysians to get their vaccine booster shots as an added protection.
On December 30, the Health Ministry announced several measures applicable to inbound flights and travellers from China.
This includes testing sewage on aircraft inbound from China for Covid-19.
As for travellers, those arriving from China at international ports of entry will be screened for fever and asked to self-declare their symptoms.
Those with symptoms will be referred to quarantine centres or a health facility for further examination and Covid-19 testing. – The Vibes, January 4, 2023
