KUALA LUMPUR – All 56 Commonwealth countries unanimously supported the reappointment of Datuk Sudha Devi KR Vasudevan as the Commonwealth Foundation chair for another two years.

Sudha, who was the first Asian to be elected to the position since the foundation’s establishment in 1996, assumed the title again on January 1. She was first elected to the position in 2020.

“(Sudha’s) reappointment is a reflection of Malaysia’s significant role and strong commitment in supporting the foundation’s works as well as the Commonwealth organisation,” the Foreign Affairs Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.

It added that as foundation chair, Sudha presides over meetings of its board of governors, represents the foundation at intergovernmental meetings and serves as its ambassador in promoting its vision and values.

“Throughout the years, the foundation has undertaken various programmes to support civic voices to influence public discourse on issues such as, among others, gender equality and community service,” it noted.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim took to Facebook today to express his congratulations to Sudha.

“I wish to congratulate (Sudha) for being reappointed for her second term as the Commonwealth Foundation chair.

“She is the first Malaysian and representative from Asia to hold the title since the foundation was formed,” he said. – The Vibes, January 13, 2023
