KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a first-category warning of strong winds and rough seas expected to occur in several areas of the country’s waters until Wednesday (January 25).

In a statement today, MetMalaysia said strong northeast winds of 40 to 50kmph with waves as high as 3.5m are expected to occur in the waters of East Johor, Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan.

Such a situation is dangerous for small boats, recreational and sea sports, it said.

A warning of a rise in the sea level was also issued by MetMalaysia for Terengganu and Kelantan waters until tomorrow with the risk of seawater overflowing on the coast.

MetMalaysia also issued a third-category strong wind and rough sea warning for ships.

It said strong north-easterly winds with speeds exceeding 60 kmph with waves reaching over 4.5m are expected in the waters north of Condore until next Wednesday and the conditions are dangerous for all coastal and shipping activities, including workers on oil rigs.

A second category strong wind of 50 to 60 kmph and rough sea warning with waves as high as 4.5m are also expected to occur in waters north of Tioman, south Condore and west of Reef North until Wednesday.

According to MetMalaysia, the situation is dangerous to all shipping and coastal activities, including fishing and ferry services.

It also issued a Category 1 warning of strong winds and rough seas in waters south of Samui, south of Tioman, Bunguran, east of Reef North, north of Reef South, Layang-Layang and Palawan until Wednesday and the conditions are dangerous for small boats, marine recreation and marine sports. – Bernama, January 20, 2023
