Bukit Aman calls for calm after reports of IS propaganda in M’sia

KUALA LUMPUR – Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani has assured the Malaysian public that police are on alert for any activities related to the propagation of Islamic State (IS) ideologies, following reports of the terror group launching a media platform in the country.

Police are also well aware of the situation and are conducting continuous monitoring of any activities related to the propagation of IS materials on social media, he said in a statement this evening.

He also explained that police are constantly working with regional security agencies and have increased coordination among local authorities to deter such activities.

“The public is advised not to be alarmed by media reports on activities by any parties to spread IS propaganda. Based on the current situation, police gave their assurance that the state of national security remains under control.

“At the same time, police are also committed to deterring any activities that disturb public peace, and will take stern action without any compromises,” he said.

The Vibes reported today that IS has launched a media platform in Malaysia, claiming its presence in the country.

Called the Al Malaka Media Centre, the group linked to IS media outlets in Indonesia and the Philippines is understood to be in direct support of a “radical political party and an established radical organisation”.

The Nordic Counter-Terrorism Network’s (NCTN) Cyber Counter-Terrorism Division, who identified Al Malaka Media Centre, revealed that the group’s content is available on the dark web.

NCTN also said the group has support structures in the country and uses radical ideologies in attempts to destabilise the current administration led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Based on materials obtained by NCTN and shared with The Vibes, the group uses an image depicting the Petronas Twin Towers with IS flags flying at the top of the building with a burning fighter jet in the sky along with the words “Hari Penaklukan Segera Tiba” (the day of conquest is soon upon us).

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail had told The Vibes that authorities have been aware of the group’s attempt at expanding its influence in Malaysia.
