KUALA LUMPUR – Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is allowed to keep his passports for the purpose of official travel, the Court of Appeal has ruled.
The ruling by the appellate court in Putrajaya was made by a bench of three judges, chaired by Datuk Hanipah Farikullah, local media reported today.
The Umno president, who is also facing 47 corruption charges, had previously applied to keep his personal and diplomatic passports to facilitate travel for official duties.
The Kuala Lumpur High Court had previously in early February dismissed Zahid’s application for the return of his passports, which were surrendered to the court as part of bail terms in his corruption trial.
Zahid, who is also the rural and regional development minister, is facing charges involving criminal breach of trust, corruption and money laundering in relation to Yayasan Akalbudi funds.
He was acquitted by the high court in another case involving alleged bribes received over a foreign visa system contract, but the prosecution has filed an appeal. – The Vibes, March 27, 2023
