GEORGE TOWN – Penang police have detained three suspects in their investigation into a dog’s beating to death.

The suspects, aged between 40 and 53, were detained in Batu Maung, which police earlier identified as the location of the brutal act that was recorded on video by an eyewitness and posted to Twitter on Saturday night.

Penang police chief Datuk Khaw Kok Chin, who confirmed the arrests in a statement today, said the three detained were a cargo agent, a bus driver and a fisherman.

They had no prior criminal records, nor did they test positive for narcotics abuse, he said.

The viral video clip showed men beating a dog, which was not visible in the clip but could be heard whimpering, after the canine was hit by a motorcycle and tried to run away to hide.

Earlier, southwest district police head Kamarul Rizal Jenal said that the incident had taken place in Batu Maung, near the Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone.

Police will investigate the case for animal cruelty under Section 29(1) of the Animal Welfare Act 2015.

The suspects, if found guilty, could see a fine up to RM100,000, jail up to three years, or both, said Kamarul. – The Vibes, July 10, 2023
