KUALA LUMPUR – Barisan Nasional (BN) is set to contest the upcoming Pelangai state by-election in Pahang.
This was announced by its chairman, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who said the decision was made following discussions with the Pahang menteri besar.
“I met Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail, and we decided that BN will contest the seat as the late Datuk Seri Johari Harun was one of us.
“We believe all the component parties under the unity government will be together with us on this,” he said.
He said this after attending the Wanita Umno’s “Himpunan Solidariti Wanita Bersama Presiden” at the World Trade Centre.
The seat fell vacant following the death of Johari in the Elmina plane crash on August 17.
Nomination for the seat is set for September 23, while polling will be on October 7.
Early voting will be held on October 3. Campaigning for the by-election will run for 14 days, from the start of nomination day until 11.59pm on October 6.
Earlier, Wanita Umno chief, Datuk Seri Noraini Ahmad urged all Umno members should give Zahid the mandate and space to lead and revive the party until the next general election.
“Changing the party president is not the right thing to do at the moment.
“We need to identify what the people want and work towards it to regain their support,” she said in her speech.
She said this was not the time to point fingers at anyone and all members need to find the best way to win the hearts of the people. – The Vibes, August 24, 2023
