PETALING JAYA – While most would expect a couple who are blind to be dependent on others and unable to look after themselves, the same does not apply to Hasan and Amida from Permatang Pauh.
Their visual impairment has never stopped them and they both continue their struggles to make ends meet and to provide the best for their son, Haikal.
They make about RM300 a week, selling plastic wares at the morning and night markets.
“If we do not work, nobody is going to look after us. We also do not want to depend on anyone,” they said.
From the RM300 they make, Hasan said RM120 is used to send Haikal to school daily, RM130 for other expenses, including travelling to the markets and RM50 for their weekly food.
According to Nurul Izzah Anwar who was recently told about the couple’s plight, Hasan and the family would sometimes only eat rice and curry for their meals.
“They may be suffering, but there is something that really impressed me.
“In spite of all their difficulties, education is a priority for them and they are determined to see Haikal realise his dreams,” she said.
The former Permatang Pauh MP said the couple want to make sure Haikal receives a sound education and grows up to be a useful member of society.
“I could see for myself – Haikal is indeed a smart boy and aspires to be a doctor with the hope of someday curing his parents’ blindness and also helping others,” said Nurul.
Moved by the plight and fighting spirit of the family, the prime minister’s daughter contacted Penang Agrotechnology, Food Security and Cooperative Development Committee chairman Fahmi Zainol and Machang Bubok state assemblyman Lee Khai Loon.
Together, the trio took the family to the supermarket where they helped Hasan purchase items he needed for his business for the next three months.
Fahmi is also assisting Hasan in getting a business licence to ensure he does not face any issues with the authorities in the markets.
Lee also helped the couple financially.
