PETALING JAYA – A policewoman’s watch became the focus of a press conference of a drug bust.
A Chinese daily shared several photos of a drug bust earlier this month on Facebook, in which the Penang police announced a seizure of 157.185kg of methamphetamine.
However, Facebook users zoomed in on one of the photos of a policewoman showing a seized item.
In the photo, the policewoman’s wrist watch caught the attention of Facebook users, with some alleging she was wearing a Rolex Daytona.
Kwong Wah Yit Poh’s post, despite it being in Chinese, collected over 2,000 comments, mostly in English and Malay, with many making remarks about the watch instead of the drug bust itself.
The matter earned the attention of Bukit Aman’s Department of Integrity and Standards Compliance (JIPS).
In an update today, JIPS director Datuk Seri Azri Ahmad said their investigation into the matter found that the “luxury watch” in question was only worth RM570.
He told Harian Metro that while police would investigate all complaints, he urged the public to check first before sharing things like this.
“Any complaints we will investigate, the public is also welcomed to channel information to us using proper channels,” he said.
Azri explained that the female officer, who is a senior police officer in Penang, produced the receipt for the watch, which showed that she bought it for RM570 at the Genting Premium Outlet in Genting Highlands. – The Vibes, October 19, 2023
