KUALA LUMPUR – How often does one see a young woman working as a butcher, a profession mostly dominated by men?

However, for 25-year-old Ummi Safiyyah Baharudin, it is all in a day’s work.

In fact, she swapped her fancy office attire for a butcher’s apron after she decided to join her cousin, Nur Farah Izzati Halim, 25, at the Chow Kit Market, here.

According to reports in Harian Metro, the Sentul lass said she has no qualms working at the market, as long as it is halal.

“It took me three months to master the art of cutting chicken using the right techniques to ensure customers are happy.

“Many were surprised when they saw me and my cousin who are still young selling chicken, as it is a trade mostly dominated by men, while there are older women also in the trade,” she said.

Ummi said there were some customers who also joked about wanting to get to know her.

“It’s fine…we are used to these kinds of jokes,” she said.

Though she is still young, she is not ashamed to work in the wet market, as she has always wanted to run her own business.

“I have become used to the conditions in the wet market, including the smell.

“Of course, there are some inconveniences when it comes to cutting chicken, but it comes with the job,” she added. – The Vibes, October 25, 2023
