KUALA LUMPUR – National mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie earn a spot in the semifinals of the 2023 Badminton Asia Championships after beating Indonesia’s Rinov Rivaldy-Pitha Haningtyas Mentari at the Sheikh Rashid Hamdan Indoor Hall at Al Nasr Club in Dubai.
The world number eight pair won the match 21-17, 15-21, 21-19 in 55 minutes.
This is the fourth victory for Soon Huat-Shevon over the 14th seed Indonesians in five meetings. The last time both pairs met was at the 2022 BWF World Tour Finals’ first round, which Rivaldy-Mentari won.
In the quarterfinals yesterday, Soon Huat-Shevon came from behind to send China’s Chen Xing-Cheng Fang Hui packing after winning 12-21, 22-20, 21-15 in a 56 minute battle.
They will now take on either top seed Chinese pair Zheng Si Wei-Huang Ya Qiong or Indonesia’s Praveen Jordan-Melati Daeva Oktaviani in the final four tomorrow.
Meanwhile, the other remaining Malaysian pair in the tournament is men’s doubles pair Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi, who will take on Indonesia’s Fajar Alfian-Muhammad Rian Ardianto later for a spot in tomorrow’s semifinals. – The Vibes, April 28, 2023
