THE Rowdy comedy show held here on February 11 is proof that Malaysian audiences are not easily offended snowflakes who need censorship in comedy.

The 90-minute show held at the Renaissance Hotel, featured dance numbers, two stand-up segments by Singaporean comedian Kumar and an electrifying opening act by Malaysian stand-up Prakash Daniel.

Prakash did not disappoint the Johor audience who were initially demanding for Kumar at the beginning of the show.

The local comedian touched on the racial dynamics of Malaysia and his observation that Johor Baru had too many suspicious massage parlours.

After Prakash's performance, the audience was treated to a parody of the Tamil hit song ‘Rowdy Baby’ featuring dancers and the diva himself, Kumar.

The first half of Kumar’s stand-up show featured his comedy set where he talked about his experiences of being a gay man in Singapore having to deal with disappointed parents and serving in the army.

Although some of his punchlines could be seen coming from miles away, he had the audience roaring in laughter as he provided a fresh perspective on what it means to be gay in a conservative society.

By no means was his stand-up set merely focused on the trials and tribulations of his sexuality, Kumar also provided humorous observations on race and sexuality in Malaysia.

Surprisingly, Kumar touching on the different sexualities of Malays, Indians and Chinese did not offend the diverse Johor crowd but left them wanting more.

Meanwhile, the second half of his show begins with a lip sync of the song ‘I Will Survive’ by Kumar. He then enters into the segment where he interacts with the audience.

Crowd work is where the Singaporean comedian shines as he toys and teases the audience, not afraid to bring up matters of race and religion.

Kumar himself expressed shock over the audience in Johor, saying he has never experienced such energy from the crowd in the southern state before.

‘Rowdy Kumar’ is a worthwhile show which allows Malaysians to take a break from the seriousness and realities of life, be introspective and have a good laugh at themselves.

He has upcoming shows later this month and in March, and tickets can be purchased on LOLAsia’s website. – The Vibes, February 17, 2023
