Educational institutions under the Education Ministry (MOE) hit by floods and designated as relief centres (PPS) will continue the learning process using the home-based teaching and learning (PdPR) method.
The ministry said that schools would notify the parents or guardians of the affected students regarding this matter.
"For students at relief centres within school premises, the state education departments (JPN) and district education offices (PPD) have mobilised the Smart Support Team (SST) and Academic Support Team (AST) to assist students with counselling and learning,” it said in a statement today.
As of Saturday, five primary schools and one secondary school in Kedah were still affected by floods, while 36 educational institutions in three states are still serving as relief centres.
This includes 20 primary and 16 secondary schools, with 34 relief centres opened in Kedah, and one each in Penang and Perak.
"A total of 1,056 MOE students are still at school premises designated as relief centres, while Perlis has fully recovered with all centres closed,” it said, adding that the ministry is continually monitoring the flood situation to ensure the safety of its students and teachers.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said on Saturday that MOE would determine the school sessions for affected schools in Kedah, including considering leniency for the involved schools.
As of 8am today, the number of flood victims in Kedah has risen to 8,898 people from 2,871 families.
According to the social welfare department’s Info Bencana portal report, all evacuees are currently housed at 44 temporary relief centres in five districts.
Kota Setar recorded the highest number of flood victims, with 5,099, followed by Pendang (1,487), Kubang Pasu (1,382), Pokok Sena (783) and Bandar Baharu (147).
Meanwhile, the irrigation and drainage department’s public Infobanjir portal reported that three rivers in Kedah are at the danger level.
These are Sungai Bata in Kampung Bata, Kubang Pasu, Sungai Anak Bukit in Taman Aman and at Jambatan TAR, and Sungai Kedah at Jambatan Lebuhraya, Kota Setar.
In Perak, the state disaster management committee secretariat said 28 people are still sheltering at the relief centre at Sekolah Kebangsaan Changkat Lobak, Kerian, which has been open since Friday after Kampung Matang Tengah was flooded.
The department also said the Bukit Merah reservoir in Kerian had reached the warning level, with the water rising to 9.09 metres.
The Malaysian meteorological department has forecast rain in several districts, including Larut, Matang and Selama, Kerian, Manjung, Hulu Perak and Kuala Kangsar, from this morning until tonight. - September 22, 2024
