A JOBLESS man was charged in the Tangkak Magistrate's Court today with murdering his wife in a house on June 2.

Mohamad Khairul Azmi Ithnin, 32, is charged with murdering Iecah Junus, 34, in a house at No. 18, Jalan Cahaya, Taman Cahaya, Serom, between 3.30pm and 5.30pm on June 2.

The accused, who was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code and can be sentenced to death if convicted, nodded in understanding as soon as the charge was read out by an interpreter before Magistrate Lee Kim Keat, reported Berita Harian.

No plea was recorded as the murder case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

Prosecution was carried out by Deputy Public Prosecutor Amirah Sapian while the accused was unrepresented.

Earlier, the prosecution requested the court to refer the accused to the Permai Hospital in Johor Bahru to undergo a psychiatric examination in line with the provisions of Section 342 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

The court granted the application, and no bail was offered while a re-mention was set for July 8 for pathology and DNA test reports.

During the proceedings, the accused's parents and siblings were also seen in court.

In the incident on June 2, a woman was found dead with cuts on her neck.

Initially, the incident was unknown until the accused contacted his brother-in-law and asked to be taken to a nearby police station.

While at the station, the accused is said to have narrated what happened before taking the police to the residence where his wife's body was found wrapped in a blanket.

Police also found a knife that was still bloody by the woman's side and was suspected of being used to kill the victim. - June 10, 2025
