THE government is mulling a proposal to ban the use of smartphones among students aged 16 and below.

This was among several measures proposed during a Cabinet meeting today following an increase in violence at national schools, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

"The proposal is being studied, but many countries have already implemented similar measures.

“We find that the influence of social media, and also online games, leads to worrying behaviours.

"However, smartphones may still be allowed for specific purposes by children, but we need to be firm in this matter," he told reporters after performing Friday prayers today.

“First, it's about safety; second, it’s social media; and third, it’s ethical educational content involving parents and the PIBG to help control their children.

“The Cabinet, and Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek will elaborate further, and I hope, principals, teachers, and parents will give full cooperation,” said Anwar.

He said the measures proposed today were aimed at ensuring that educational premises are always safe.

“We have discussed the steps that should be taken immediately, such as guaranteeing school security.

“The police and the Home Ministry (KDN) will ensure that monitoring school security is not their job,” he said. - October 17, 2025
