KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia recorded 1,925 fresh Covid-19 cases and two deaths today, the Health Ministry said.

The new infections bring the cumulative number of cases to 108,618 while the death toll stands at 457.

A total of 1,123 recoveries were also registered, bringing the total number of those discharged to 86,715.

The ministry said there are 21,445 active cases, with 117 in intensive care and 55 requiring intubation.

It added 10 of today's new cases were imported.

Pahang saw a surge in new Covid-19 cases today after logging 288 transmissions compared with yesterday’s 11.

The ministry said the spike in cases in Pahang is related to the Tembok Mempaga prison cluster, which recorded 282 cases.

Other cases in clusters that involved lockups, immigration detention centres, and prisons comprise the Jalan Harapan (9 cases), Tembok Gajah (9 cases), Tembok (3 cases), Pagar Siput (3 cases), and GK Tawau (one case) clusters.

Kuala Lumpur almost doubled its new cases today with 360 compared with yesterday’s 194.

Meanwhile, Selangor remained top of the list with 747 cases today. Of that, 625 were detected through screenings at clusters and contact tracing.

Sabah saw 230 cases today, followed by Johor (110), Negri Sembilan (60), Penang (57), and Kelantan (31).

Perak recorded 17 cases, followed by Melaka (9), Kedah (8), and Sarawak (4), while Perlis and Labuan reported zero cases today.

The first death involved a 65-year-old man at the Sg Buloh Hospital and a 68-year-old woman at the Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital in Kota Baru. Both were Malaysian citizens and had prior health conditions, such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

The ministry logged nine new clusters today.

Seri Lanang cluster in the Klang Valley has 173 cases, Jalan Chu (Lembah Pantai) has 44, followed by the Awan Puteh construction site (29), Integra Ikon in Titiwangsa (11), and Jalan Satang in the Klang Valley (30).

Tembok Mempaga is another new cluster detected in Bentong, Pahang, and has 284 cases. In Sabah, the Timbang Dayang cluster in Kota Belud has 13 cases while the Teguli cluster has 12.

The Rambai cluster involves cases in Melaka, Selangor and Negri Sembilan. So far, it has 16 cases. – The Vibes, December 29, 2020
