THE Federal Territories Ministry and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission have begun discussions to sharpen Kuala Lumpur’s direction as a smart city anchored on public safety, crisis resilience and people-centric governance.

Federal Territories Minister Hannah Yeoh said the discussions were held during a courtesy call by MCMC chairman Tan Sri Mohamed Salim Fateh Din at her office today, with a strong focus on the strategic role of 5G technology.

In a Facebook post, Hannah said she stressed that digital infrastructure, particularly 5G networks, must serve as the backbone of public policy, covering security, disaster preparedness and the overall well-being of residents.

She said the meeting also addressed the need to integrate smart technologies to speed up emergency responses, enhance road safety through strategic cooperation with the Royal Malaysia Police, strengthen protection for senior citizens and ensure uninterrupted communications in Mass Rapid Transit and Light Rail Transit tunnels as well as along highways.

“A smart city is not about who is the most advanced. A smart city is about who is most prepared to protect its people in the most critical moments.

“This is Kuala Lumpur’s commitment: to ensure that technology is not merely about making daily life easier, but becomes a shield that safeguards citizens when it matters most,” she said. - February 9, 2026
