PAS insists that the appointment of Perikatan Nasional (PN) Chairman, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, as opposition leader is not to position him as a 'poster boy' for the Prime Ministerial candidate, said PAS Vice President, Datuk Mohd Amar Abdullah.

According to him, the matter of the Prime Ministerial candidate was not discussed at all in the appointment.

"The appointment was made to fill existing vacancies following the party's current needs.

"We did not discuss this 'poster boy'. There was no discussion; it was just on current matters," he said when contacted by Sinar Harian.

He said this when asked to comment on claims that Ahmad Samsuri's appointment gave the impression that the figure was being groomed as a future PN Prime Ministerial candidate.

Mohd Amar explained that the appointment was made solely to meet the needs of the party's organisation after a vacancy occurred.

The media had previously reported that the puzzle of who would lead the opposition bloc in Parliament was finally answered when PN announced the Kemaman MP as the new Opposition Leader to replace the incumbent, Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin.

PN Secretary-General, Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan, said the decision was agreed upon at the 2nd PN Supreme Council Meeting which was held at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday.

According to him, the meeting was chaired by Ahmad Samsuri himself as the PN Chairman and was attended by all Supreme Council Members from member parties. – May 17, 2026
