MORE than 250 homes in Anjung Bercham in Ipoh were affected following continuous heavy rain accompanied by strong winds for almost two hours, yesterday.
Among the affected areas were Hala Tasek Timur 1; Lorong Bercham 19; Dataran Tasek Timur as well as several other locations such as Lintasan Tasek Timur 1 and 3, Hala Tasek Timur 34 and Launhan Tasek Timur 15.
Most of the houses suffered damage in the form of torn-off roofs, leaking ceilings and several other structures, but no victims were reported to be involved in the incident.
Bercham State Assemblyman (ADUN), Ong Boon Piow announced that the affected area has now been declared a disaster zone.
He said that the declaration of the area by the Chairman of the Kinta District Disaster Management Committee enables all departments and agencies to help coordinate the distribution of appropriate assistance to the victims involved.
"We have opened an assistance centre at Dewan Dato Sham, Kampung Tersusun Tasek, starting at 10 am today, with the presence of officers from the Social Welfare Department (JKM).
"For the purpose of applying for assistance, I advise victims to file a police report and take photos of the damage to their respective homes," he said.
He said that so far, about 250 houses have been identified as having been damaged, but the number is expected to increase after a full assessment is carried out. – June 20, 2026
