GEORGE TOWN – Neighbours had presumed that a 35-year-old insurance agent had in all likelihood committed suicide after she was found dead on the ground floor of the 31-storey Bukit Awana Condominium here.

Police however were suspicious over the conduct of her husband, who seemed nervous as they combed the couple’s unit for clues.

A few hours after interrogation, the husband confessed to pushing his wife to her death after a quarrel ensued on Friday night.

She was staying on the 19th floor of the sprawling condominium project here when a neighbour alerted police to seeing someone fall to the ground of the high-rise building in Jalan Bukit Kukus in Air Itam.

Onlookers rushed out as such cases were uncommon in the area, and many were baffled that the often smiling woman would want to allegedly take her life in this manner.

The couple were from Masai, Johor, and they had relocated to Penang for work.

The husband who worked as a cook confessed that in a fit of anger, he had pushed his wife down while they quarrelled in the living room of the unit after he became suspicious that she was cheating on him.

Police seized two smartphones, a bottle full of crystal rocks and a plastic with dried leaves, which they suspected to contain narcotics.

The 34-year-old suspect later also tested positive for ganja.

Northeast district police chief Soffian Santong, who confirmed the case, said it would be investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, which carries a mandatory death sentence.

The suspect is being remanded for six days to facilitate investigations.

A post-mortem revealed that the cause of death was due to multiple injuries consistent with a fall from extreme height. – The Vibes, April 11, 2021
