KOTA KINABALU – Is there a new political axis brewing in Sabah? Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) today reacted to Warisan’s gesture of cooperation on a positive note by expressing openness towards working with the opposition outfit.
The party even expressed hope that its fellow components in Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), which is ruling the state, will view Warisan’s approach on the matter in constructive light.
Its president Datuk Seri Maximus Ongkili said PBS is always open to political cooperation with Sabah-based parties for the sake of Sabahans.
“Well-known for its political goals, PBS defends its stands for multi-ethnic politics; multiculturalism; state rights and Malaysia Agreement 1963; principled political conduct especially in championing the anti-hopping law; protecting and defending the state’s security, especially against illegal foreigners; and ensuring economic progress for the people of Sabah.
“We welcome political friends who are desirous to share these aspirations with us in PBS,” said Ongkili, who is Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Sabah and Sarawak Affairs).
“Hence, we are constantly on the lookout for political friends and partners to make Sabah a better land for genuine people of Sabah.
Ongkili said PBS has taken note of Warisan president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal’s gesture yesterday to work together for the good of Sabahans.
Ongkili noted that his party is enjoying a good working relationship with Bersatu, as well as GRS and Perikatan Nasional (PN).
“We are comfortable and able to serve the rakyat in Sabah and nationally through the leadership of Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.
“I hope the nice gesture of political cooperation from Warisan, and our PBS response for political friendship on behalf of GRS can improve political stability and socioeconomic development in Sabah, ensuring a safer Sabah, especially from illegal immigration,” Ongkili said.
He stressed that strategic interest must also be taken into account by PBS.
“We should welcome political cooperation for the sake of the people, so long as the intentions are sincere and there are no selfish conditions,” he said.
Yesterday, Shafie had indicated readiness to work with PBS, describing them as the ideal partner to work with to fight for Sabah’s rights.
Warisan, which ruled Sabah from May 2018 to September 2020, had terminated its relationship with the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition last year. – The Vibes, May 12, 2021
