KOTA KINABALU – Despite the lockdown, Sabah police gave the green light for the commemoration ceremony of the Double Six tragedy in Sembulan today.

The monument which marks a significant tragedy in the history of Sabah was visited by Sabah Star deputy president, Jalumin Bayogoh who represented party president Datuk Seri Jeffrey Kitingan in the event.

Today marks the 45th anniversary of the Double Six tragedy which saw the airplane carrying Sabah’s fifth chief minister Tun Mohd Fuad Stephens and six other state ministers crash, killing all on board.

The Double Six Monument was erected on the exact spot of the fatal crash.

It has been reported that many are still not convinced that all has been revealed about what caused the 1976 plane crash which happened less than two months after Berjaya, Fuad’s party, defeated Usno in the Sabah elections and formed the state government.

Conspiracy theorists insist that the crash had something to do with Sabah’s oil rights.

They point out that it happened when Fuad was negotiating Sabah’s oil rights with the federal government.

In memory of this historic event, Jalumin said that Sabah Star was formed based on the fighting spirit of the Sabah people who have always demanded fairness from the federal government to develop and manage the state.

“One of the things claimed by (Sabah) Star and the indigenous people of Sabah is for justice to be served with regards to the Double Six tragedy.

“Like (Jeffrey) said, we must always remember the incident not only as a way to seek justice, but also as a mode to educate the younger generation about the history of our land,” he said.

Also present were Sabah Star’s deputy secretary general Ardino Diris and supreme council member Datuk Jaimin Samitah, as well as other party leaders. – The Vibes, June 6, 2021
