MIRI – A team of firemen were harassed and assaulted by several young men while fighting a fire at a village in the Lawas district in northern Sarawak.

A video of the assault shows several men shouting at the firefighting team and one of them  attacking a fireman.

State Fire and Rescue Department director Khirudin Drahman said it is regrettable that such an incident had happened, adding that the altercation at the village took place yesterday.

“The fire team was responding to a fire. They were performing their duties professionally and should not be attacked for that,” he said in a statement here today.

He said the Lawas Fire and Rescue Department had lodged a police report about the incident.

The youths involved had apologised, but such incidents should not happen at all, he stressed.

The video showed the youths shouting at the firemen who were dousing a fire that was burning down a house.

One of the youths also punched a fireman until he fell to the ground. A family in the house escaped the fire.

With regard to the case that happened at Kg Belipat, Lawas police confirmed a 30-year-old man has been arrested to facilitate a probe into the assault. – The Vibes, June 20, 2021
