KOTA KINABALU – An 18-year-old on his first day of work as a food-delivery rider was slapped with a RM1,500 fine for pulling down his face mask to drink water during a break near Centre Point here last Friday.

Kamar Reyhan is working as a rider while awaiting enrolment at an institution of higher education.

In the incident, Kamar, who was on a bicycle, had  stopped in front of Centre Point to take a short break and pulled off his mask to sip some water.

He said that, before he could get back on his bicycle, police on patrol arrived and issued him a compound for not wearing a mask, while his protestations were ignored.

Kamar then shared the incident on Facebook, grabbing the attention of netizens, including Luyang DAP rep Phoong Jin Zhe.

Phoong said that he could relate to Kamar’s predicament and the situation he faced.

“He did not break the rules on purpose. He is also an essential worker who is providing a service to all of us.

“I will help Kamar and plead to the authorities with the hopes of reducing his burden,” Phoong said in a statement today. – The Vibes, June 21, 2021
