GEORGE TOWN – Three people tested positive during a free Covid-19 mass screening here today, and were immediately referred to the Penang Health Department for further action.
More than 400 stall owners and traders in Taman Chai Leng, Prai, took part in the drive, which was held at the Taman Chai Leng multipurpose hall from 9am to 5pm today.
This comes after the emergence of the Jalan Kurau 3 Covid-19 cluster last week.
The initiative was jointly organised by Prai assemblyman P. Ramasamy’s service centre, the Tzu Chi Buddhist association, Nasi Kandar Pelita, Klinik Wong and Seberang Prai Tengah Health Department, with the cooperation of Seberang Prai City Council (SPCC).
Present to oversee the drive were Ramasamy, and SPCC councillors David Marshel and Jason Raj.
David said they have informed stall owners, traders and residents, especially those who have been in close contact with infected patients, in the residential area to join the mass screening.
As at noon today, a total of 194 individuals have been tested, he added.
Ramasamy said his service centre plans to conduct another Covid-19 screening for more than 1,000 people in the Prai constituency on July 1, adding that the drive will be sponsored by the state government.
The deputy chief minister II also called on his constituents to register for the vaccination via the MySejahtera app, and thanked the organisers for their assistance in arranging the screening under such short notice.
The Taman Chai Leng wet market was shut on June 21 after several traders were infected with Covid-19.
As of yesterday, 79 people tested positive for the virus in the residential housing area. – The Vibes, June 28, 2021
