GEORGE TOWN – The Penang government has requested the National Security Council take into account the performance of each state’s threshold value to determine its transition into Phase 2 of the National Recovery Plan, said Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

He said the government should not consider the infection rate for every state.

“I have already voiced my views when attending the special meeting of the technical committee on the management of Covid-19 at the national level last Sunday.

“In fact, this proposal was also agreed to at the state exco meeting this morning, and the Penang government requested the National Security Council to consider it so that each eligible state can move to Phase 2,” he told a press conference today.

Chow added that states that move into Phase 2 need to continue improving their SOP compliance.

He said the Penang government expects as many as 10% of residents to receive at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine by next month.

He added that a total of 591,532 doses are expected to arrive in Penang next month under the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme.

“In July, the state government has set three goals – to have 10% of the population vaccinated, provide jabs to all senior citizens and those with comorbidities, and to start giving vaccines to individuals under the age of 60.”

Over the past two weeks, Penang has several times recorded daily Covid-19 cases below 100. – The Vibes, June 30, 2021
