Top Glove shuts Klang factories due to EMCO

KUALA LUMPUR – Top Glove Corporation Bhd has confirmed the suspension of its factories in Klang during the current enhanced movement control order (EMCO) enforced in Selangor.

The company said this follows the National Security Council’s (NSC) clarification of industries that are categorised as essential services.

It is also understood that the NSC’s instruction affected all glovemakers in Selangor, following the move to impose EMCO in sub-districts and localities in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur from July 3.

“Top Glove wishes to inform that its medical glove factories in Klang will not be operating temporarily, in compliance with the EMCO directive, while waiting for clarification from the National Security Council,” it said in a statement to The Vibes.

“The company looks forward to safely resuming operations at the appropriate time and continuing to produce its much needed medical gloves for frontliners and healthcare workers in Malaysia and globally.”

The company’s confirmation also comes after public outcry over factories in Selangor operating throughout the lockdown as the state sees no significant decline in daily Covid-19 cases.

On July 4, police said they were investigating a woman who alleged the increase of Covid-19 cases in Selangor was due to a glovemaking factory.

Petaling Jaya police chief Mohamad Fakhrudin Abdul Hamid said this was because the individual’s video – uploaded on TikTok – could cause fear among the public.

The woman alleged the cases originated from the operator’s action of not adhering to the EMCO.

“She claimed that the increase of Covid-19 cases was due to the factory operator, who moved positive (Covid-19) workers from their dormitory in Petaling Jaya to two hotels in Klang, to enable them to go to work during the EMCO period,” he said in a statement.

Fakhrudin added that Klang Utara police headquarters had also opened an investigation paper against the factory operator under Section 269 of the Penal Code, for negligence that might have led to the transmission of the infectious disease to others. – The Vibes, June 6, 2021
