KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has approved an allocation of RM100 million for the outsourcing of health services in the Klang Valley, said Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba.

He said in a press conference today that the funds will also be used to aid in the treatment of non-Covid-19 cases among patients in private hospitals, which have been working closely with the ministry since the pandemic began.

He added that the ministry will be expanding the bed capacity in all hospitals in the Klang Valley, to 3,777 from 3,412 – Selangor (795), and 1,112 beds in KL and Putrajaya.

Dr Adham said the country has recently spent an additional allocation of RM700 million for the country in helping to tackle Covid-19.

He added he had also agreed to provide additional allocations to the Klang Valley, including RM20 million for mental health management, RM5 million added ward equipment for 151 hospital beds and 15 ventilators, and other items in Hospital Tunku Ampuan Rahimah, Klang.

He said another RM5 million was set aside for Selangor hospitals to expand their spaces, while intensive care staff would be given an additional RM1,000 monthly allowance.

“Apart from permanent and contract staff who have been stationed in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, and Negri Sembilan, the ministry has also added 1,190 health workers (there).

“The ministry has also mobilised 417 health workers from other states to Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, and Negri Sembilan, and added some 5,000 volunteers and workers to support the services in the Klang Valley and Negri Sembilan.”

The minister said Selangor has used 53% (3,413) of its oxygen tank supply for Covid-19 patients, and another 1,000 tanks will be sent to the low-risk treatment and quarantine centre in MAEPS, Serdang.

He added that the MAEPS centre has been turned into a fully functional hospital to allow treatment for category 3 and 4 Covid-19 cases with an overall oxygen capacity for 1,500 patients and a total of 4,888 beds.

Dr Adham said among other steps taken by the government, the ministry has already converted Sg Buloh Hospital and Ampang Hospital into full Covid-19 facilities beginning June 23.

He added that Ampang had a capacity of 577 beds, whereas other hospitals had been converted to hybrid Covid-19 hospitals except for Hospital Shah Alam that remains a non-Covid-19 facility.

Dr Adham said all hospitals in the Klang Valley had also increased their bed capacity from 3,412 to 3,777, while Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya saw an increase to 1,129 beds from 795 previously.

He added that cooperation with three training hospitals – Universiti Malaya, UKM children’s hospital and UPM teaching hospital – have allowed the Klang Valley to have a capacity of more than 5,000 hospital beds.

The health minister said the capacity of emergency beds in Selangor will be increased from 486 to 591, while ICU beds in Selangor would be beefed up from 280 to 349 in Selangor, while Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya would see ICU beds increased from 90 to 117.

“The supply of oxygen in Selangor currently is at 6,391, and the usage has reached 3,413 or 53%,” he said, adding that the MAEPS had 1,000 oxygen tanks and 1,000 oxygen concentrators.

He added that the military’s Tuanku Mizan military hospital (HATTM) has activated its Disaster Management Zone (DMZ) involving its basement area that has been fitted with beds, centralised oxygen supply, vacuum ports and specialised electrical supply.

He said the HATTM treatment complex and its field hospital had 150 beds.

“The ICU capacity at HATTM has also been raised with an addition of 17 beds, including ventilators, bringing the total to 25 beds.” – The Vibes, July 13, 2021
