KUALA LUMPUR – Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has slammed Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin for implying that the Umno MPs that withdrew support for him are doing so in the hopes that the charges they are facing in court will be dropped.
“In the end, he (Muhyiddin) blames those that pulled their support for him as those who want their cases dropped, whereas the best way to drop charges is to flatter him instead of going against him.
“Do ask (Datuk) Xavier Jayakumar, Senior Minister (Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali), Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed and others,” he said in a cynical jab against Perikatan Nasional MPs implicated in possible probes by the authorities.
In a Facebook post, Najib, who is currently facing charges linked to the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal, also slammed the Pagoh MP for saying a motion of no confidence will be held next month rather than immediately.
“He (Muhyiddin) said the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had asked him to prove his majority support.
“He said the Agong had decreed that only eight Umno MPs have withdrawn their support. Take note. He said only eight MPs.
“He says he believes that he still has majority support. But he promised to the Agong that he will only bring up the motion of confidence during the Parliament session in September,” the Pekan MP said.
In questioning why the confidence vote cannot be held now, Najib also dismissed the notion of Covid-19 affecting Parliament sittings.
“I continue to see those (MPs) who are apparently exposed to Covid-19 in Parliament freely moving from one place to another and continuing to conduct nightly meetings at their residence,” he said in a sly reference to meetings being held at Muhyiddin’s residence involving Perikatan Nasional leaders since last week.
Yesterday, Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced that the party is withdrawing its support for the PN administration and Muhyiddin effective immediately, saying statutory declarations by party MPs renouncing their backing for the prime minister have been presented to the king.
Najib was among the Umno MPs alongside Zahid when he made the announcement.
Today, however, Muhyiddin maintained that he still commands majority support in the Dewan Rakyat, and that the matter will be put to the test in the House next month. – The Vibes, August 4, 2021
