Voting rights are not a political tool, Muhyiddin: Undi18

KUALA LUMPUR – Undi18 has taken a stance on Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s address this evening, saying that the right to vote for those between the ages of 18 and 21 is not a political tool for him to use in his bid to stay in power.

Earlier today, the Pagoh MP stated that his Perikatan Nasional administration is more than ready to implement automatic voter registration via the tabling of a constitutional amendment bill in September through bipartisan cooperation.

"The proposed bill is a tactic by the prime minister to stay in power, as bipartisan cooperation of the bill would eventually translate into a confidence vote for the prime minister.

“The Undi18 bill was unanimously passed as a constitutional amendment in Parliament in July 2019, and remains yet to be implemented two years later,” it said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Sekretariat Solidariti Rakyat (SSR) rubbished Muhyiddin’s appeal for bipartisan support, accusing him of not being genuine with his offer.

“If the statement was made six months ago, one could have assumed his intentions were good,” said SSR in a statement.

They added that his speech today clearly shows that he no longer holds the mandate to lead the country.

SSR said this does not change plans to hold the #Lawan rally scheduled for August 21, in the event Muhyiddin refuses to resign.

“More than 11,000 deaths, 700,000 unemployed, and only now Muhyiddin wants to increase allocations to fight Covid-19?

“This doesn't make sense, and such leaders must be thrown out,” it added.

Today, Muhyiddin, in a bid to cling on to power, reached out to the opposition for support.

In return, the Pagoh MP offered parliamentary reforms should he garner at least a two-thirds majority.

Among these parliamentary reforms include yearly equal allocations for all parliamentarians, as well as an anti-hopping law and an office for the opposition leader equal to that of a minister. – The Vibes, August 13, 2021
