KUALA LUMPUR – It is crucial for female students to know that they are not obliged to take part in the humiliating practice of period spot checks in schools, said non-governmental organisation (NGO) Sisters in Islam (SIS).

In fact, the civil society group wants to make it clear to these students that they have a right to say no to these inspections.

“Young girls in a vulnerable stage of life need to be empowered to stand up to situations that violate their rights.

“Hence, should they face any type of violations – period spot checks included – they must not stay silent, and pick up the courage to say no,” SIS executive director Rozana Isa said in a statement.

She added that the denial of a woman’s bodily autonomy reinforces gender inequalities and encourages discrimination.

In light of the controversial issue that has grabbed headlines for over a year, SIS has released guidelines and tips for young women who may need guidance in the event that they encounter such degrading occurrences.

While it is no secret that victims find it difficult to open up about their experiences, SIS encourages young women to always speak out to a trusted adult to seek help.

“It is important to note that seeking help does not equal being weak. When young girls speak up and get the right adults involved, it can help stop harassment and bullying.

“There are situations where victims may not be able to access a trusted adult, and in such cases, SIS urges young women to reach out to the relevant NGOs for help and assistance.

“Our young girls have been shunned for years regarding the issue due to a lack of awareness.

“Together, we can inch closer towards combating violations against young girls and women,” Rozana said.

Anyone requiring assistance over the matter can contact the All Women’s Action Association at 016-237-4221/016-228-4221, or the Women’s Centre for Change on weekdays from 9am to 5pm at 011-3108-4001 (Penang hotline) or 016-439-0698 (Seberang Jaya). – The Vibes, November 25, 2021
