[UPDATED] S’gor govt staffers will visit flood victims to distribute aid, Amirudin says

KUALA LUMPUR – State personnel will be deployed to distribute the RM1,000 financial aid per household affected by floods in Selangor starting Wednesday, said Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

He said families affected by floods will receive at least RM1,000 per household from the Selangor government and are not required to make police reports to be entitled to the assistance.

Currently, victims are categorised into three segments – one for those who sought shelter in government temporary relief centres (PPS), second for private PPS and third for those who stayed home.

For those who chose to stay put during the floods, Amirudin said staffers from the state government will go from house to house to conduct registration.

Registration for categories 1 and 2 will start on Wednesday, while category 3 registration will be from January 3 onwards.

He said the state government will also establish one-stop centres (OSCs) where flood victims can register for aid themselves.

At these OSCs, Amirudin added, police, Social Welfare Department, and Selangor Zakat Board personnel, among others, will be present.

“The state Zakat Board will be distributing an additional RM600 per household in aid. So we have these OSCs to make it easier for victims to get things done.”

Amirudin also took the opportunity to address allegations that volunteers are required to register with necessary agencies, saying it is merely for streamlining and safety.

“Registration does not mean the need for approval as the state government has no right to allow or disallow anyone from performing their duties.

“I was informed that two volunteers drowned while helping, and we don’t want more incidents where volunteers become victims to the disaster due to bad coordination.”

Amirudin, who is also Sg Tua assemblyman, said the clean-up programmes by KDEB Waste Management have already collected up to 13,699.55 tonnes of flood debris.

He added that the financial impact of cleaning activities currently stands at RM6.031 million, and is expected to rise further.

The state government also estimated that damaged infrastructure amounts to RM369,501,257 in costs. – The Vibes, December 27, 2021
