KOTA KINABALU – A 31-year-old unemployed suspect will be remanded for seven days to assist the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC)’s investigations on illegal digital vaccination certificates.

Magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun set the remand after hearing submissions from MACC investigating officer Mohd Akid Aizuddin Othman, today.

A MACC source said the suspect who used to work as an office boy is believed to be the mastermind of the operation, with accomplices across Sabah.

“The case is allegedly to be on a similar scale to a syndicate operation given that witnesses came forward from various parts of the state.

“The suspect is believed to have played a crucial role in the issuance of the digital certificates via the MySejahtera app to those who were unvaccinated.

“MACC is still trying to track down the suspect’s accomplices who are believed to be across the state.

“Raids will also be conducted in numerous inoculation centres to determine the scale of the syndicate,” said the source, adding that they had so far identified up to six witnesses linked to the syndicate.

Sabah MACC officials detained the man at their Kota Kinabalu office around 1.30pm, yesterday.

A MACC source told the media that the suspect demanded about RM2,000 from the public to be paid to volunteers working in a vaccination centre in Sabah.

In return, those who pay will have their digital certificates updated illegally on the MySejahtera app, even though they were not inoculated. – The Vibes, January 12, 2022
