NIBONG TEBAL – A 6-year-old child has been admitted to Penang Hospital’s intensive care unit after an explosion occurred in her house in Taman Cenderawasih near here at around 9.30pm last night.

According to a report by the Welfare Department, the blast occurred when the front door of the house was opened by 44-year-old S. Leaga and his family, who were returning home from an outing.

Four of her relatives have also been warded in the same hospital for injuries.

At the same time, three neighbouring houses also suffered serious damage due to the explosion.

Two out of the three households there had to temporarily vacate their homes until damage and debris could be completely cleared up.

Fortunately, none of the neighbours were injured.

Leaga’s home, No 141, Jalan Cenderawasih 1, had serious damage in its hall and two of its rooms. No 145 had damage in its kitchen, bathroom and hallway ceiling.

Meanwhile, the house directly behind Leaga’s residence – No 28, Jalan Cenderawasih 6, had cracked or damaged windowpanes and also damage to the ceiling in one of its rooms.

The Welfare Department said that they were providing initial help to the affected families, and also that they will be lodging police reports on the incident.

The conditions of the victims admitted to the ward were reported to be stable.

The relevant authorities are expected to conduct an assessment on the incident today. – The Vibes, May 9, 2022
