PETALING JAYA – In less than two weeks, the disruption of the Kelana Jaya line LRT service during rush hour yesterday was once again caused by a stalled train that had a brake calliper hydraulic leakage problem.

Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Amir Hamdan said in a press conference today that the incident, which affected 22,100 passengers, occurred near the Pasar Seni LRT station at 4.36pm yesterday.

“When passing the KL Sentral station, the brake system on Train 62 failed due to a hydraulic fluid leakage, causing the train to stop as it was no longer safe to drive manually.”

So, he said, the Operational Control Centre (OCC) cut off the power supply to enable engineers and technicians to carry out inspection work on the affected train.

He said free shuttle buses were deployed to ferry passengers to and from the Bangsar, KL Sentral and Pasar Seni LRT stations.

The service was fully restored at 6.36pm when Train 62 was diverted to the pocket track.

Meanwhile, Kelana Jaya Line rail engineering head Leman Zakaria said Train 62 is an 818 Innovia Mark II train model produced by Bombardier.

The replacement and overhaul of the brake system for this train model, he said, has been carried out progressively since last October.

“There are a total of 432 brake callipers that need to be overhauled. We have targeted to overhaul around 10 callipers in a week.

“The upgrades have reached 39% and are expected to be fully completed by November 30.”

Commuters affected by the disruption will be offered a one-way travel coupon, which can be redeemed within five days beginning today at any LRT Rapid KL counter.

Yesterday, passengers on the Kelana Jaya LRT line were furious over yet another service disruption that caused them to be stranded at stations.

Frustrated commuters took to social media to vent, with some posting photos of large crowds of people waiting at the LRT stations. – The Vibes, May 21, 2022
