MIRI – Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) said it is not going to join any formal alliance with any opposition bloc in the state but is willing to cooperate with other opposition parties to avoid multi-cornered fights.
Its youth chief Johnical Rayong also said that it is not fighting to achieve Sarawak’s independence from Malaysia either.
“We in PSB have never agreed to form any alliance with any other parties,” he said in a statement today.
“PSB is also not fighting to gain Sarawak’s independence from Malaysia but fighting for the rights of Sarawak.”
Rayong was responding to Parti Bumi Kenyalang president Voon Lee Shan’s announcement in Sibu yesterday that the party is forming a pact with four other opposition outfits to jointly contest as a united front in the upcoming general election (GE15).
The others are Parti Aspirasi, Parti Sarawak Bersatu, Parti Bangsa Dayak Sarawak Baru and Parti Sedar.
He had said that they would field one common candidate from any of the five parties for each of the 31 parliamentary constituencies in the state.
“Our common goal is to fight for Sarawak’s rights and the independence of Sarawak,” Voon had said.
Rayong today said the statement by Voon was his own.
On June 9, Sarawak DAP formed its own GE15 campaign machinery to kickstart preparations to face the polls that will see parliamentary contests in Sarawak.
Incumbent Sibu MP Oscar Ling had been appointed as DAP’s GE15 campaign director for Sarawak.
Ling had said that he will also liaise closely with Sarawak PKR and Sarawak Amanah which are DAP’s Pakatan Harapan partners.
On the other side of the political fence, Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) has announced that it has identified its proposed candidates to contest in the seven Chinese-majority parliamentary constituencies.
SUPP president Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian said the constituencies are Bandar Kuching, Stampin, Sibu, Sarikei, Miri, Lanang and Serian.
Meanwhile, the ruling Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) leaders are drumming up political support from village communities during the ongoing Gawai Dayak and Hari Raya Aidilfitri gatherings.
GPS chairman Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg has said that the coalition is aiming to win all the 31 parliamentary constituencies.
He said the coalition will not accommodate candidates from non-GPS parties. – The Vibes, June 12, 2022
