KUALA LUMPUR – The Immigration Department has denied a newspaper report titled “200,000 warga asing bolos” (200,000 foreigners escape), saying it is untrue and unsubstantiated.

Director-General Datuk Khairul Dzaimee Daud said the report gives the wrong impression of enforcement agencies’ efforts to combat illegal immigrant syndicates.

“From January 1 to November 18 this year, a total of 34,529 illegal immigrants were detained out of the 90,292 people checked in 6,300 enforcement operations carried out nationwide,” he said in a statement yesterday.

He said 376 employers were detained in the same period.

“The Immigration Department is working closely with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to cripple syndicates involving agents of illegal immigrants, as well as immigration officers.” – Bernama, November 20, 2020
