KUALA LUMPUR – Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s status as Pekan MP remains not only until his pardon petition is dealt with but also until his review at the Federal Court is completed, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Azhar Azizan Harun said.

Azhar said his office had received from Najib’s lawyers, Shafee & Co, a letter informing Parliament of the former prime minister’s application for the apex court to review its decision on August 23 to uphold conviction and sentencing in the SRC International Sdn Bhd corruption case.

“Taking into account the application for pardon filed before this, and now the filing for a motion of review, therefore Najib’s status as Pekan MP at this time does not change, and will only be decided after both applications for a pardon and a review are decided,” Azhar said in a statement today.

Najib filed for a pardon petition on September 2, within the 14-day timeframe after his sentencing as required under the law.

Azhar on September 5 said Parliament had been informed of Najib’s application for a pardon, and as such his status as Pekan MP is intact unless the appeal for pardon is rejected.

On September 6, it was reported that his lawyers filed for a review of the Federal Court’s decision.

The apex court had decided that Najib’s conviction was valid and had also upheld his 12-year-jail sentence and RM210 million fine. He was sent to Kajang Prison immediately. – The Vibes, September 8, 2022
