KUALA LUMPUR – Education programmes on television have been deemed a success after getting a total of more than seven million views over a few months, Education Minister Mohd Radzi Md Jidin told Dewan Rakyat today.

The TV programmes are aimed at students in rural areas who do not have access to the internet or computer devices.

He said TV Okey RTM has a total of  1.8 million views while Astro Tutor TV has 5.4 million.

According to the Statistics Department, there are a total of 1,383,489 primary school pupils in Malaysia in 2017.

“Educational TV programmes have been very helpful in increasing student access to learning, especially those in the rural areas with no internet or digital devices,” he said,

A survey conducted from April 17 to 19, saw 96.4% of students agree for education programmes on television to be added.

Meanwhile, 98.7% of students, 98% of teachers, and 98% of parents and caretakers agree that these programmes should continue even after the end of the movement control order (MCO).

The survey involved 600 schools, 12,506 students, 17,665 teachers, and 14,786 parents or guardians in eight states, including Sabah and Sarawak.

There are currently nine hours of educational content on television, two hours on TV Okey RTM that started on April 6, four hours on Astro Tutor TV beginning May 4, and three hours on NTV7 that just started airing yesterday.

He said that each video produced has to go through a process of quality control.

“It also involves subject teachers who are also involved in the preparation of scripts and video presentation to ensure it is in line with the textbooks. This is also to ensure that the videos produced are in line with the curriculum requirements of the subject.” – The Vibes, November 24, 2020
