KUALA LUMPUR – Two newly appointed senators today took their oath of office before Dewan Negara president Tan Sri Rais Yatim.

They are Social Security Organisation board chairman Prof Tan Sri Dr Mohamed Haniffa Abdullah and Wanita Umno executive committee member Datin Ros Suryati Alang.

The office of the Dewan Negara president, in a statement, said Dr Haniffa and Ros Suryati were appointed as senators by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong for a three-year term from September 20, 2022 until Sept 19, 2025.

Dr Haniffa, who graduated with a medical degree from the University of Madras, India, has served as a medical officer at the Klang and Sabak Bernam hospitals and is also the founder and executive chairman of Foreign Workers Medical Examination Monitoring Agency Sdn Bhd.

“Meanwhile, Ros Suryati is a successful entrepreneur and had received the Entrepreneur Icon award in 2017,” the statement read.

In his speech, Rais called on all senators to provide service on the ground through the non-governmental organisations they represented.

He hoped that all senators would play an active role, especially as the Dewan Negara is currently going through a transformation phase.

“I hope that honourable members will fully use your expertise as outlined in Article 45 of the federal constitution to live up to your roles,” he said.

Meanwhile, Rais said each senator should examine the list of collective tasks in their respective main achievement indices from 2023. – Bernama, September 26, 2022
