KUALA LUMPUR – PKR president and opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has invited current prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to serve the new government under Pakatan Harapan, if the opposition coalition retakes Putrajaya

"Tan Sri Muhyiddin, with the current figures, has fallen as prime minister. I welcome him to cooperate. I have no personal problems with him. His readiness to cooperate will help (the) transition (to) be peaceful and organised.

"And if he (Muhyiddin) is ready, he can help serve in whatever capacity," Anwar said a press conference at noon today.

Anwar, who is Port Dickson MP, claimed that he has solid numbers to take over the government.

Muhyiddin is scheduled to give a live televised address, supposedly on the Covid-19 issue, at 2.30pm.

Anwar’s claim that he now enjoys the majority support may force Muhyiddin, who heads the ruling Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition, to dissolve Parliament soon and call for a snap election in an attempt to avoid another change of government.

However, Anwar maintained that the premier does not have the power to do so, and that only the Agong enjoys such discretion.

Asked whether former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, 95, and his new Pejuang party would be part of a new ruling coalition with Anwar, the PKR leader said the elder statesman’s name is not part of his list at the moment.

He also rubbished claims that his new government is a “backdoor government” similar to PN, reminding that PH had indeed received the mandate of the public in the last general election in 2018.

On whether MPs from Umno, PAS and Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) would be joining him, Anwar merely said: “We have MPs from various parties. If anything, let them provide their own statement and views.”

“But at the moment, there is no doubt that the support I have (is) strong and formidable,” he said.

Anwar’s announcement today came less than seven months after PH lost federal power to PN. - The Vibes, September 23, 2020.
