KUALA LUMPUR – The suspect who was involved in a robbery and killing of a former Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi) researcher at his residence in Bukit Bandaraya, Bangsar here yesterday was arrested by police via facial recognition.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Saiful Azly Kamaruddin said the wife of the victim who was at the scene during the incident recognised the suspect, making it easy for the police to detain him.
He said finding the wallet of the victim of the second robbery scene in Taman Tiara Titiwangsa here also helped the police to detain the suspect.
“On the same day (November 29), after the suspect robbed the Mardi researcher’s house, he broke into an engineer’s house in Taman Tiara Titiwangsa,” he told a media conference at the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters here.
Saiful Azly also confirmed that the police had detained 10 male suspects, aged from 20 to 29 years, yesterday on suspicion of being involved in the case.
“A check found eight of the 10 individuals detained had previous crime records including narcotics. They were all remanded seven days from today until December 6,” he said.
He said police were still hunting several more suspects to help in the investigation.
In the incident at 3.30am yesterday, Wan Hassan Wan Embong, 71, was killed after he was hacked in a robbery at his house while his wife Yusof, 70, sustained injuries on her hand.
The victim was believed to have been hacked with a parang when he tried to put up a fight against two unmasked robbers who broke in through a kitchen window of the two-storey bungalow.
The suspect then robbed the house of an engineer in Taman Tiara Titiwangsa, on the same day. – Bernama, November 30, 2020
