KUALA LUMPUR – Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was questioned by Bukit Aman this afternoon over his Malay Proclamation campaign, which was reportedly feared to be linked to activities that could possibly harm parliamentary democracy.
In a video posted on Facebook, his lawyer Rafique Rashid Ali said the former prime minister told police that he was ready to answer any charges in court.
Rafique, who accompanied the 97-year-old to Bukit Aman at 12.30pm, described the situation as strange, especially for an individual of Dr Mahathir’s age to be investigated under Section 124(b) of the Penal Code for carrying out activities harmful to parliamentary democracy.
“Is it illegal to talk about Malay-related issues?” asked Rafique. Section 124(b) carries a prison sentence of up to 20 years.
The Malay Proclamation has listed 12 major problems facing the community. Several top leaders have signed it, including PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, Bersatu deputy president Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu, and Bersatu information chief Razali Idris.
It was reported on May 4 that Hadi had signed the document in the presence of Dr Mahathir.
Several Perikatan Nasional leaders had earlier met with the former prime minister to sign the Malay Proclamation, a document intended to “unite” and “save” the Malay community.
