GEORGE TOWN – Six mosques in districts in Penang will each receive RM20,000 in financial assistance through the post-movement control order (MCO) Gerobok Rezeki programme.
The state’s Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Ahmad Zakiyuddin Abdul Rahman said the programme was an initiative by the state executive council’s Islamic Affairs, Cooperatives and Community Empowerment portfolio to assist those affected by the Covid-19 outbreak.
“The Gerobok Rezeki will be placed at a food storage place in each district mosque, comprising essential items such as rice, sugar, flour and others.
“The Gerobok Rezeki will be managed by the respective mosque committee members and open to any congregants in each mosque,” he told reporters after the launch of the initiative here today.
Earlier, during the launching ceremony, Zakiyuddin presented a replica cheque of RM120,000 to Penang Islamic Religious Affairs Department director Mohd Zakuan Zakaria.
With no sign that the Covid-19 pandemic will end any time soon, Zakiyuddin said the Gerobok Rezeki programme was a good initiative, as some were struggling to put food on the table.
“Even though there are many programmes similar to Gerobok Rezeki, the initiative also wishes to train members of the community with a source of income to contribute more to those in need,” he added. – Bernama, December 11, 2020
